Communications Director

SALARY: $67,000-$80,000, depending on experience.
TIME COMMITMENT: Weekdays, some evening and some weekend hours required.
REPORTS TO: Executive Director

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic communications and marketing collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, website updates, petitions, social media, blog/op-eds, email marketing, press releases, videos, advertisements, action alerts, and annual major events.
  • Work with the PB team to generate content for communications outreach and campaigns
  • Oversee key social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
  • Attend PB events to take pictures and videos. Need to coordinate with overall PB staff and comms team to schedule coverage.
  • Manage organization’s digital assets: photos, videos and creative collateral
  • Recruit and manage communications employees, interns and volunteers
     

COMMUNICATION STRATEGY:

  • In collaboration with program lead staff and communications staff, develop, oversee, and implement a comprehensive strategic communications plan to further Pacoima Beautiful’s mission, vision, and priorities, amplifying the voices of our member and youth organizers.
  • In collaboration with program lead staff, guide and oversee the development and implementation of communications campaigns and marketing strategies for programs and priorities, such as overarching messaging, talking points, and earned media and social media strategy, and establishing measurable goals and outcomes.
  • Supervise and contribute to annual Pacoima Beautiful Communications strategic planning Committee, together with Pacoima Beautiful’s Executive Director and Communications staff.
  • Guide and collaborate in the content production for strategic campaign communications priorities including writing, videography, graphic design, event production, website updates, photography, public relations.
  • In collaboration with the Program Lead staff and Communications staff, build relationships with targeted media and journalists, identify media opportunities, shape larger news narratives around policy and programmatic civic priorities.
  • Develop and implement strategies and tools to effectively analyze data and metrics to grow the
    impact of communications materials and guide strategy improvement.

SPECIAL EVENTS

  • Ensure development of and maintain quality and consistency of Pacoima Beautiful’s brand identity, credibility, and voice throughout all external communications.
  • Oversee production and publication of Pacoima Beautiful’s reports and events across platforms, including website, social media, and paid social media ads.
  • Work with Program Leads and third parties, including consultants, vendors, and contractors to oversee graphics, writing, editing, and promotion, as needed.
     

DEVELOPMENT

  • Work with Executive Director to develop and execute annual strategy for development-related digital communications, for example, Giving Tuesday, EJ Awards, and end of year appeal. 

LEADERSHIP, STAFF, AND ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Support, mentor and supervise Communications staff to further develop and strengthen skill sets and overall professional growth.
  • In collaboration with Executive Director, build the vision and design of the communications team.
     

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated capacity for high-level strategic planning, driving strategies and campaign development to shape narrative and issues through proactive messaging and outreach.
  • Ability to maintain information confidential and exercise good judgment.
  • Thrives in a distributed staff environment; is independent, proactive, and able to work under tight deadlines and evolving priorities.
  • Demonstrated success in crisis communications, including the ability to grasp and appropriately respond to both internally and externally precipitated crises.
  • Commitment to advancing equity, environmental, social, and economic justice.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in collaboration with diverse staff, organizational leaders, and community allies.
  • Passion for storytelling through multi-media types, both visual and written
  • Excellent writing, verbal and interpersonal communication skills and a scrupulous attention to detail
  • Knowledge of California media markets, including Spanish speaking outlets, reporters, and media markets.
  • Knowledge of Pacoima and Northeast San Fernando Valley regional and statewide environmental justice issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and adhere to deadlines with limited supervision
  • Commitment to collaborative problem solving with a positive attitude and generous spirit
  • Tenacity, humor, and confidence when faced with challenging projects
  • Superb project management skills to get things done
  • Proven ability to set and meet measurable goals
  • 2+ years communications experience
  • 3+ years social media (organic and/or pai) experience required
  • Website CMS upkeep.
  • Print design skills preferred.
  • Proficiency in graphic design video and multimedia editing tools
  • Experience hiring and managing a remote team and project-based consultants.
  • Knowledge of social media content scheduling and management tools like Sprout Social
  • Knowledge of Every Action CRM and suite of organizing tools or quick learner.
