COMMUNITY ORGANIZING

General Membership

Our membership base is composed of community members whose dedication and engagement drives our mission forward. For over 20 years our members have worked tirelessly to help us identify and mitigate the environmental injustices issues that plague the Northeast San Fernando Valley, ranging from industrial pollution to lack of access to healthy foods.

Our members come together once a month for our member meetings where we strive to develop community leadership through programming that provides our members a community tool kit to become advocates for the changes they want to see in their homes, schools and neighborhoods.

Our doors are always open to community members that are seeking to become involved and to local organizations that hope to add value to our community through presentations or announcements.

Community Inspectors

Through our Community Inspectors Program we recruit and train residents to become community leaders and advocates for social change. The training for our inspectors takes place during our weekly Community Inspectors meeting where the curriculum we implement is designed to equip our inspectors with the tools needed to create positive change in our neighborhoods. Our inspectors are committed to:

  • Identifying and tracking environmental hazards in their surrounding neighborhoods such as: illegal dumping, graffitti, stormwater pollution, air pollution and lead contamination
  • Reporting environmental hazards to the appropriate agency or reporting back to our Community Organizers
  • Attending public meetings and voicing their community concerns and observations

ENERGY

Pacoima Beautiful believes in an equitable transition to clean energy that can make our communities and economy greener. We work towards this through our participation in the following coalitions:

  • Re Power LA  advocates for energy efficiency programs that reduce the burden of energy costs for low income ratepayers and works with LADWP to expand the resources offered by the UPCT program

  • The Los Angeles Clean Energy Coalition works to advance policies and programs that will transition L.A. to 100% clean energy. LACEC is committed to ensuring that this transtion leads to just development and living wage jobs.

WATER

Pacoima Beautiful is a member of the OurWaterLA Coalition,  a diverse coalition of community leaders and organizations from across Los Angeles County. OurWaterLA is committed to creating a strong water future for Los Angeles by ensuring access to clean, safe and affordable water for drinking, recreation, and commerce. In July 2018, the OurWaterLA coalition helped pass the LA Safe Clean Water Program by the LA County Board of Supervisors. If the measure is adopted it will help reduce polluted water runoff in streets, rivers, and beaches as well as create more green space in neighborhoods, and generate green jobs.

WASTE & RECYCLING

We joined the Don't Waste LA coalition to address and find a solution for the environmental impacts the waste and recycling industry has historically had in communities like Pacoima and Sun Valley. Front line communities such as these suffer from the emissions of dirty diesel trucks and the air pollution coming from local waster facilities. DWLA has been successful in helping pass the Zero Waste LA Franchise system where the city must divert 90% of its waste by 2025 and work towards implementing a Facility Certification Program. This new ordinance will divert waste, increase food recovery and establish a green economy where worker safety will be a priority in this industry.
